Originally used as guard and draft dogs, nowadays Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs are also valued companions, protectors and family members much appreciated for their calmness and balance.
These robust dogs have solid bones and well developed muscles, but in spite of their impressive stature, Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs are active animals with remarkable staying power. There are major differences between the sexes.Self-assured, even-tempered, alert, vigilant and fearless in everyday situations, Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs are good-natured and very affectionate around people they know. They are also very confident around strangers.

Two shorthaired Bernese Mountain Dogs were shown to the great promoter of Swiss mountain dogs Professor Albert Heim at a dog show to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Swiss Kennel Club in 1908. Heim recognized them as the survivors of the large mountain and butcher’s dogs that were dying out, descendants of a variety of guard, draft and cattle dog that was once found all over the European continent. Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs were recognized as a distinct breed in Switzerland a year later and the breed club was formed in 1912. The breed standard was published by the F.C.I February 5, 1939 Nowadays, Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs are bred outside of Switzerland, too, and are much loved family dogs.
