The first ever standard was drawn up way back in 1909, but it would be half a century before the breed was recognized as a toy terrier.
This compact, fairly low-set antipodean is of a medium length, refined, but substantial enough to catch and kill house rodents. It displays all the terrier characteristics, embodying keenness, activity and soundness.

Too often confused with their Yorkshire cousins, Silkies are terriers in their own right, celebrating 50 years as an officially recognized breed in 2009. Australian Terriers have also played a big role in the breed’s development.Thanks to their silky hair with center parting, these dogs always look very presentable. Silkies have a very distinctive coat among the longhaired terriers. Silver and white are not acceptable, while blue on the tail must be very dark. The preferred colors for the top-knot are silver blue or fawn. The blue and fawn are distributed as follows: tan around the base of the ears, on the muzzle and the side of the cheeks; blue from the base of the skull to the tip of the tail, running down the forelegs to near the wrists and down the thighs to the hocks. The tan line runs down the stifles and from the wrists and hocks to the toes and around the vent. On the body, the blue must not contain any fawn or bronze. Tan markings must be free from any smuttiness. Black is acceptable in puppies, but blue must be well established by 18 months of age.
