A Skye Terrier by the name of Greyfriars Bobby, born in 1856, became a celebrity in Scotland. After the death of its owner, John Gray, a policeman, Bobby guarded the grave for 14 years until its own death. To honor its proverbial loyalty, money was put up for a statue of the dog, which is now a protected monument in Edinburgh.
Elegant and very dignified, Skye Terriers recognize just one owner and are distrustful of strangers, but never malicious. Their legendary loyalty is just one among many qualities.

Just like the other Scottish terriers, of which they are said to be the oldest, Skyes are descended from a more or less well-defined type of shaggy coated hunting terriers. Some of the greatest Scottish families were involved in breeding these dogs in the 18th century and beyond, essentially for work. Today’s breed is based on these early specimens.Skye Terriers are immediately distinguishable from their cousins, due to their low body, which is twice as long as it is high and covered with abundant hair. It moves apparently without effort, exuding strength through its fore- and hindquarters, body and jaws.
