There has been much discussion about the position of American Akitas as a separate breed. Nowadays, the F.C.I. recognizes the Akita Inu as a Japanese breed and the American Akita as a breed in the U.S.A.
Friendly, alert, responsive, dignified, docile and courageous: these are the adjectives that best describe American Akitas. This powerful companion is lauded for its innate guarding instincts and socialization from a very early age is strongly recommended. They are relatively distrustful of people they do not know and a little bit dominant in relations with other dogs. They bark little, but have great presence, exuding confidence in all circumstances.

Akitas started to become known in the U.S. after World War II, when they were brought into the country by military personnel back from Japan. Crossings with Mastiffs and German Shepherds produced the type we know today. The first breed club was formed in 1956 and the American Kennel Club recognized the breed in 1972 (registration in the stud book and full rights to enter shows). These large, solidly built dogs – well balanced and heavy-boned – have a broad head in the shape of a blunt triangle, a deep muzzle, relatively small eyes and erect ears, which are carried forward, almost in line with the back of the neck. Their head is said to resemble a bear’s, specifically a polar bear’s, but there are actually many more similarities between the two species.
