Taiwan Dogs are natives of the island, descendants of Southeast Asian hunting canines classified as pariah or primitive dogs, which used to populate the mountainous central regions. These dogs were the faithful companions of primitive hunters in the forests. In 1980, a joint study was conducted among 29 indigenous tribes by the National Taiwan University, Gifu University in Japan and the students of Nagoya University on native Taiwanese dogs. It confirmed that the Taiwan Dog is descended from the hunting dogs of Southeast Asia. Nowadays the breed is a popular guard and companion dog.
