While it likes most of all to hunt hares, an Ariegeois is also used on the trail of roe deer and wild boar.
The Ariegeois is a light, medium-sized dog of elegance and distinction. This breed of hardworking dogs with plenty of initiative and enterprise is very apt at driving game towards the waiting hunters. Quick-witted and fairly easy to train, it has a good voice and a cheerful, sociable mien, characterized by unstinting loyalty.

Viewed from the front, slightly domed skull, not too broad, with slight occipital protuberance.

Very muscular, firm back, well fused, slightly arched loins, fairly level croup, long chest.

White with well defined jet black markings, sometimes mottled. Fairly pale tan markings on cheeks and above the eyes.

This breed from the French department of Ariège is the result of a cross between a French beagle dog and a scenthound, possibly the Grand Bleu de Gascogne or the Gascon Saintongeois. It has the physical characteristics of a scenthound, albeit with less distinction, size, and heaviness.The Ariegeois is used for hunting with guns and coursing, much appreciated for its size and skills, either alone or in a pack, and its maneuverability on difficult terrain.
