Small Munsterlanders are versatile hunters with an inexhaustible predation instinct and solid nerves that react well to game.
Small Munsterlanders are intelligent, quick studies. Full of temperament but well balanced, they have a stable character and are attentive and friendly to humans. They are good family dogs that have no trouble to socialize. On the hunt, these ideal team players maintain close contact with their master or mistress.

In the 1870s Munster was home to a longhaired bird dog with a great nose that was good at pointing and retrieving. In 1906, together with his brothers, the poet Hermann Löns took on the task of seeking out the last specimens of what he named the Heidewachtel or Heath Spaniel. At the same time, Baron von Bevervörde-Lohburg and a local school headmaster were working on their own breeding program, producing the Dorster variety. The Small Munsterlander club was eventually founded in March 1912.
